Illinois State's History-Social Sciences Education program has three tenure-track professors from the Department of History, three non-tenure track History-Social Sciences Education advisors, and instructional assistant professors. The History faculty and staff members work closely with the College of Education while maintaining a direction that effectively prepares history teachers. The Partnership and Mentoring Schools associated with the History-Social Sciences Education program reinforce this direction.

Why Study History-Social Sciences Teacher Education?

History is a narrative account of political, social and cultural events and achievements of mankind. Historians evaluate and analyze documents and records relating to the deeds and aspirations of past generations and use this knowledge to understand and interpret the present. Students studying history will develop strong research, writing, analytical thinking, and communication skills.

Being Successful in the Field

  • An undergraduate degree in history is good preparation for graduate study in history as well as other areas such as psychology, law, or business.
  • Research the prerequisites of the area of interest and tailor program of study to meet curricular and skill needs.
  • Research Web sites and books that address various job opportunities, pay structure, and hiring processes.
  • Part-time, summer, internship, and volunteer experiences are critical.
  • Become familiar with the government application process for opportunities in federal, state, or local government.
  • For careers in politics, be prepared to volunteer extensively before being hired or elected as an employee or official. Begin by working with the campaign or official of choice while in college.
    For careers in arts and humanities, obtain a broad liberal arts background including knowledge of the arts, personal and mass communication, and foreign languages.
  • Develop skills by obtaining a leadership role in a school or community organization.
  • Get involved in student government.
  • Prepare to develop a specialty area including both academic training and work experience for history related careers.

Illinois State's preferred filing period for freshman students for the fall semester is September 1-November 15. Applying early is encouraged, as the University must limit enrollment due to space at the University and in specific majors/programs. Visit the Office of Admissions to apply today!
