Teresa Valerio

photo of Teresa ValerioA good night’s sleep. We all crave it, but it can be elusive.

A contributing author of Sleep Disorders and Sleep Promotion in Nursing Practice, Teresa Valerio is a leader in the study of sleep. She will give a talk titled Sweet Dreams – How You Can Improve Your Sleep at 7 p.m., Wednesday, April 23, in room 118 of the Alumni Center, 1101 N. Main St., Normal.

The evening is sponsored by the Harold K. Sage Foundation Fund, the Illinois State University Foundation, the Marion McDowell Stafford Lectureship Series Fund and Mennonite College of Nursing in honor of Nursing Week. Part of the Speaker Series of Illinois State University, the event is free and open to the public.

Valerio’s research examines the relationships among college students’ self-reported sleep quality and factors such as emotional health, stress and academic performance. An assistant professor with the Mennonite College of Nursing since 2011, Valerio heads up the Doctor of Nursing Practice program for the College, and is also a nurse practitioner with Illinois State’s Student Health Services.

Valerio has been honored with the Illinois Board of Higher Education Nurse Educator Fellowship, the Marie Lindsey Spirit of Advanced Practice Nursing Award by the Illinois Society for Advanced Practice Nursing, and received the 2013 Nurse Practitioner State Award for Excellence from the American Association for Nurse Practitioners. In 2012, Valerio was the first nurse practitioner to become board-certified in the practice of behavioral sleep medicine by the American Board of Sleep Medicine.

Her work has been published in scholarly journals, such as Sleep and the Journal of the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners. Valerio was honored as a contributor to the 2011 Book of the Year Award from the American Journal of Nursing for the book Sleep Disorders. She was also recognized with distinguished service awards from the Illinois Society for Advanced Practice Nursing in 2009 and 2011 as well as excellence in nursing awards from OSF Saint Francis Medical Center.
