Overview

As an Electrical Engineering student at Illinois State, you can expect to learn the broad foundations of electrical engineering along with important computer engineering principles. Our program greatly values Illinois State's core values of equity, diversity, access, and belonging ensuring our program is suitable for a wide spectrum of learners.

The courses in Electrical Engineering focus on topical areas including communication systems, control systems, digital and embedded systems, electronic circuits, power systems, and robotic systems. Through course work that integrates theoretical concepts, experiential learning, and hands-on design skills, you'll be well-equipped to build engineering and R&D careers that significantly impact the quality of life in the communities where you live and work.

You will also be able to join campus chapters of engineering professional organizations such as the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE), Society of Women Engineers, National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE), Society for Hispanic Professional Engineers, and Engineering Without Boarders (EMB) among others. These organizations allow you to meet new people, build a network of support, and work as a team, and participate in regional and national competitions.

Point of Pride

Our industry advisor board is composed of multiple Fortune 500 companies and engineering firms looking to mentor our students and provide internship and career opportunities.

Why study Engineering - Electrical Engineering?

The Electrical Engineering major teaches you about the diverse aspects of engineering foundations and practices including problem formulation, recognizing constraints, designing economical and sustainable solutions, building prototypes, testing prototypes, and revising initial designs to final products.

Our program includes hands-on learning in first-year design, labs in sophomore and junior years that validate theories learned, and interdisciplinary/team based senior capstone projects. Our classes combine theory and project work, which provide our diverse students with the satisfaction and joy of experiencing how electrical engineering principles are quickly turned into functional engineering gadgets and products.

As part of the newly founded College of Engineering, our student laboratories and design studios will be equipped with the same state-of-the-art tools used by practicing engineers worldwide. Our graduates will be readily employable because of the high demand for electrical engineers in Illinois and across the nation.

Some of our graduates may choose to attend graduate programs and build R&D careers. Electrical engineering careers are among the highest-paying jobs in the engineering disciplines. A career in electrical engineering will put you in a position to positively impact the everyday lives of others.

Electrical engineering graduates help safeguard the environment by reducing use of energy from fossil fuels, reducing emissions from automobiles through hybridization, reducing the use of water through smart/wireless farming. All these innovations directly improve the quality of human lives.
