Overview

The minor in Interdisciplinary Studies allows students, with the help of a faculty advisor, to construct an interdisciplinary program designed to meet specific educational goals that may not be accommodated by existing minors at Illinois State.

Students who complete the Individualized Sequence will have their transcripts noted: "Minor in Interdisciplinary Studies: Individualized Sequence: ________________" (the theme that is specified on the plan of study).

  • Course Requirements (Catalog)

Point of Pride

Highly motivated students can create their own minor, combining courses from many different departments under the guidance of an advisor.

Why study Interdisciplinary Studies?

Highly motivated students are encouraged to pursue the Interdisciplinary Studies minor because they are allowed to craft their own academic minor based on their specific interests.

How to Apply

Application Information

Students should select an appropriate faculty member to assist in developing a Plan of Study, which must contain 18-24 hours from at least two academic departments.

Only current Illinois State students can apply to the Interdisciplinary Studies - Individualized sequence, after the completion of 15 semester hours of coursework. Start by filling out this inquiry form.

Requirements

After completion of 15 semester hours of coursework and before completion of 75 semester hours.

Minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA at time of application.

How to Apply

Minors can only be declared by current Illinois State students. Students can apply on My.IllinoisState.edu. At this time, you be will asked to:

  • Submit your Rationale explaining why you want to pursue this minor.
  • Submit your Plan of Study for approval by your faculty advisor, the Interdisciplinary Studies coordinator, and the Office of the Provost. Your plan will be closely reviewed to ensure it's realistic. At least one-half of the coursework in the sequence must be taken after the proposal has been approved.

If your proposed minor is approved, your Plan of Study is filed with the Office of the University Registrar. At this point the minor is officially declared.

Changes in an approved Plan of Study must be authorized in advance. A letter outlining the proposed change and signed by the faculty advisor should be submitted to Wendi Whitman in University College.

Application Period

Applications for the Interdisciplinary Studies minor are always being accepted. Applications are reviewed once a month.
