Spanish

Degree Offered: M.A.

The Department of Languages, Literatures, and Cultures offers a flexible program leading to the Master of Arts in Spanish. Students have three options for completing the program, depending on which culminating project they choose. The culminating project reflects one of two areas of interest: (1) Literary and Cultural Studies and (2) Theoretical and Applied Linguistics.

Option 1 - Comprehensive Exam

33 hours minimum required:

  • 6-hour core:
    • · One 3-hour course from Literary and Cultural studies: LAN 405, LAN 490 ,  SPA 405,  SPA 482
    • · One 3-hour course from Theoretical and Applied Linguistics: LAN 475,  LAN 480,  LAN 485
  • 27 hours of 400-level Spanish electives
    • 9 out of the 27 hours must be of an emphasis area
      • Emphasis area options include:
        • Literary and Cultural Studies:
        • SPA 405, SPA 411, SPA 415, SPA 418, SPA 423, SPA 424, SPA 426, SPA 427, SPA 431, SPA 434, SPA 436, SPA 437, SPA 470, SPA 482, SPA 484
        • Theoretical and Applied Linguistics:
        • SPA 410, SPA 411, SPA 421, SPA 425, SPA 460, SPA 472
  • A culminating project: the successful completion of a comprehensive exam

Note:

Courses taken for core cannot count toward the elective total. Unless otherwise specified, Spanish Elective courses can be satisfied with any 400-level Spanish course. A student must pass at least 6 courses that are taught in Spanish to graduate from this program. A maximum total of 9 credits from study in another department or at another university. Courses taught in Spanish can vary. Please see academic advisor for more information.

Option 2 - Thesis

33 hours minimum required:

  • 6-hour core:
    • · One 3-hour course from Literary and Cultural studies: LAN 405, LAN 490 ,  SPA 405,  SPA 482
    • · One 3-hour course from Theoretical and Applied Linguistics: LAN 475,  LAN 480,  LAN 485
  • 27 hours of 400-level Spanish electives
    • 9 out of the 27 hours must be of an emphasis area
      • Emphasis area options include:
        • Literary and Cultural Studies:
        • SPA 405, SPA 411, SPA 415, SPA 418, SPA 423, SPA 424, SPA 426, SPA 427, SPA 431, SPA 434, SPA 436, SPA 437, SPA 470, SPA 482, SPA 484
        • Theoretical and Applied Linguistics:
        • SPA 410, SPA 411, SPA 421, SPA 425, SPA 460, SPA 472
  • 4 out of the 21 hours must be 499
  • A culminating project: the successful completion of a thesis

Note:

Students who write a thesis must complete at least 4 hours of 499 to fulfill the Graduate School requirement. Courses taken for core cannot count toward the elective total. Unless otherwise specified, Spanish Elective courses can be satisfied with any 400-level Spanish course. A student must pass at least 6 courses that are taught in Spanish to graduate from this program. A maximum total of 9 credits from study in another department or at another university. Option 3 - Courses

39 hours minimum required: 

  • 6-hour core:
    • · One 3-hour course from Literary and Cultural studies: LAN 405, LAN 490 ,  SPA 405,  SPA 482
    • · One 3-hour course from Theoretical and Applied Linguistics: LAN 475,  LAN 480,  LAN 485
  • 33 hours of 400-level Spanish electives
    • 9 out of the 27 hours must be of an emphasis area
      • Emphasis area options include:
        • Literary and Cultural Studies:
        • SPA 405, SPA 411, SPA 415, SPA 418, SPA 423, SPA 424, SPA 426, SPA 427, SPA 431, SPA 434, SPA 436, SPA 437, SPA 470, SPA 482, SPA 484
        • Theoretical and Applied Linguistics:
        • SPA 410, SPA 411, SPA 421, SPA 425, SPA 460, SPA 472

Graduate Certificate in Instructional Technology in World Languages

Designed to offer knowledge of instructional technology in the teaching of foreign/second languages. Nine (9) hours are required to earn the certificate, which include the following: one required course LAN 421 (3 hours); two elective courses (6 hours) from: TCH 401, TCH 432, TCH 438. Graduate standing and a grade of B or better in coursework are required.
