Language Proficiency Assessments
Illinois State will accept certification via Language Testing International (LTI), an organization affiliated with the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL). LTI provides certification for schools, universities, and other organizations for a growing list of over 100 languages. Credit will be awarded per the chart below.

*For languages offered at ISU, you do not need to utilize the services of LTI. Please see the department of Languages, Literatures, and Cultures for more information on our proficiency exams (111-116 for all languages; also 214 for Spanish) for academic credit and our self-placement exams for courses offered.
**LAN 112, 115, and 116 are "general" language course references. Language-specific courses may be offered in French, German, Italian, Japanese, Spanish and Portuguese.
Note that students who complete a language course at ISU with a C or better can earn up to eight hours of CAP credit. Contact the department of Languages, Literatures, and Cultures for more information.
