Frequently Asked Questions
How do I register for my commencement ceremony?
Registration for the winter commencement ceremonies begins in late September and registration for the spring commencement ceremonies begins in late February. All students who have applied for graduation by the published deadline will receive an email with additional registration information. There is no fee to participate in the commencement ceremony. Spring ceremonies include both spring AND summer graduates.
When and where are diplomas mailed?
Diplomas will be mailed to the address indicated on the application for graduation approximately 10-12 weeks following the conclusion of the semester in which you complete your degree.
How do I invite international guests to my ceremony?
It is recommended that students planning to invite international guests start the visa process at least one year in advance. Commencement ceremony exception requests based on delayed guest visas will not be accepted. For additional information, visit the Office of International Engagement.
Are majors printed on the diploma?
No, majors are not printed on the diploma. Diplomas include the degree title and any degree honors earned.
I completed two majors. Will I receive two diplomas?
If you're pursuing one degree with two majors, you'll receive one diploma for the primary major. However, if you complete all the requirements for two separate degrees, you'll receive two diplomas, one for each degree. Majors are not listed on diplomas, so if you earn two degrees of the same type, your diplomas will look the same unless major honors are earned.
I want to frame the diploma. What are the dimensions?
The size of the diploma is 10" x 8".
Where do students get their honor cords?
If you have earned a Latin honors designation (Summa Cum Laude, Magna Cum Laude, or Cum Laude), the Office of the University Registrar will provide you with your honor cord. You will be notified by email about cord pick-up options.
Please refer to the student honors/honor cord section for additional information.
What if a student is finishing up coursework/internship in the summer?
August graduates are recognized in spring commencement celebrations. Illinois State University does not hold commencement events in August.
